This is the fourth post in a five-part blog series providing you with the FRS challenges I’ve run into most often and tips for solving them.
In many Reports there is a requirement to show the Base or Level 0 Members and to skip any of the roll-up Ancestors in the hierarchy.
If the Report is HFM, no problem – simply utilize the Base or Base (Inclusive) Functions provided in FR Studio.

However, if the Report is for a Planning or Essbase application, this Function does not exist.

There is a Level 0 List but that would return all Level 0 members rather than a specific subset that might be needed for the Report. The solution is to use the Advanced Report functions to link together multiple selections to filter the result.
Example: Accounts
- Using the Descendants Function, select the Hierarchy Member whose Level 0 Descendants are needed for the Report
- Switch to the List tab and select the Lev0, Accounts and add to Selected box on the right
- Click on the View button and select Advanced. This adds the Operator column
- Click on the word “Union” and change it to “And”
The Descendants Function will pull All of the Accounts under Recruiting Expenses and the Lev0, Accounts Function will pull all Level 0 Accounts. The “And” joining them will filter what is returned in the Report to only the Level 0 Accounts under Recruiting Expenses.
